What is CSS?

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a web language developed specifically for the purpose of enhancing the presentation style of the webpages. This is required to make them more user friendly and to incorporate several different elements apart from simple text. HTML is the official language for developing web content. However, HTML was always meant to be only used for creating the basic structure of a web page. Some web developers started using HTML for web layouts. This was not only a tedious job but also led to confusion as the layouts were not supported by all browsers. To overcome this problem CSS has been developed as the styling language for web content. It achieves this purpose through sophisticated techniques and tools which enhance the appearance of a web element.

Why should you use it?

Highlighting text on a web page can help bring important information immediately to the readers attention .One of those cool CSS3 declarations that you can use today is ::-moz-selection, which overrides your browser-level or system-level text highlight color with a color of your choosing. It's a nice touch for those using modern browsers. Just try to select a portion of this paragraph to see a working example.

How to use it

Gecko is the only engine requiring the prefix, meaning that you should use both   ::selection and ::-moz-selection for the selection to display the same in Chrome/Safari andFirefox. Only a small subset of CSS properties can be used in a rule using ::selection and ::-moz-selection in its selector: color, background, background-color and text-shadow.  This means that you can only style the text color, background color and the text shadow via CSS. Note that, in particular, background-image is ignored, like any other property, and text-shadow only works in Chrome, Safari and Firefox 17+.
