E. the individual plant level. e. at the population or at the species level (Asker 1979). e. the rate of off-types may be sufficiently low to be acceptable. Otherwise, it was shown in a few cases that facultativeness can be modified through selection (Savidan 19S2a). Apomixis and sexuality are not allelic alternatives, but independent modes of reproduction which can occur side by side (Harlan et al. 1964; Nogler 19S4a). When first announced, this concept was easy to accept in the case of aposporous apomicts, because there were many examples in which meiotic and aposporous embryo sacs developed side by side in the same ovule.

E not from specific apomictic genes or alleles. Carman bases his model on two major assumptions. e. most likely from allopolyploids as defined in Rieger et al. (1976). The second assumption is that there is a series of observations from interspecific or intergeneric crosses producing abnormalities in plant reproduction mimicking at least part of an apomictic development. It is possible that a majority of apomicts are allopolyploids, but we argued earlier (Section IB3) that autopolyploidy has probably been largely overlooked in previous reviews.

These findings appear to be in contradiction with the parthenogenesis step being a mere pleiotropic effect of the apomeiotic gene, as suggested in Section IB2. They represent, however, little more than rare exceptions in plant materials where apomeiosis appears to be nearly always closely associated with parthenogenesis. Related to the parthenogenesis control, Mazzucato et al. (1996), using auxin-induction, demonstrated that parthenogenesis in Poa was stable within and between environments (from one season to the next), suggesting a strong genetic control.
