If we but listen, these are voices that have echoed down through our history even to the present day. Or consider the Reconstruction era, itself followed quickly by the institution of Jim Crow laws in the South and segregationist practices in the North, maintained through agencies ostensibly charged with enforcing the law as well as through practices of lynching, terror, and ostracism.
