Then someone—an eyewitness said it was that stout fellow, Attucks—struck at a soldier’s musket with a piece of cordwood. Suddenly, one soldier acted without orders and fired, hitting Attucks in the chest and killing him. More shots were heard, and before the violence ended, 11 people had been hit; two more 16 Attucks, Crispus Paul Revere of Boston printed and sold this image of the “massacre” of March 5, 1770, in which Crispus Attucks became the first person to die for American independence. A month after joining the army he was assaulted by a railroad guard and eight or more thugs as he boarded a train in Baltimore. With his uniform torn and fearing for his safety, he left the station and returned with a military and police escort. Despite this protection, he suffered a hard blow to the face and took his seat on the train only after his bodyguards drew their revolvers. On another occasion, he reported for duty at Camp Stanton, Maryland, to find that the white assistant surgeons there refused to serve under him.
