Now, narratives without an underlying theory can inform, but they do not necessarily illuminate. I shall therefore try to construct the beginnings of such a theory.

Much of the material in Parts IIIV was developed in a graduate course on development economics in the Economics Department. My understanding of the epidemiological and environmental sides of things was helped greatly from a workshop on poverty that I conducted with Julie Anderson; from the Environmental Studies Forum at the Institute for International Studies, conducted by Walter Falcon and Roz Naylor; and from a workshop on population and environment at the Morrison Institute for Population and Resources, conducted by Marc Feldman.
