It was like old times, as though the intervening years of my life as a law professor and her illness had never been, and we were about to sit down to thrash out one of the many civil rights cases we'd worked on in the 1960s. We hugged each other, and then Geneva took me inside, into a large sitting room which, in striking contrast to the cottage's exterior, she had transformed into a library complete with books packing the shelves lining the walls, books stacked in every free space on the floor, and a legal databank terminal-but no telephone.
