Germany passed a eugenic sterilization law in 1933, soon after the Nazis took power, and used it to force sterilization of some 400,000 institutionalized people whose defects were presumed to be inherited. Later the Nazis carried eugenics to its extreme by trying to wipe out the genes of Jews and whole ethnic groups through mass killing. They questioned the man, and he identified the reluctant coworker as a 27-year-old baker named Colin Pitchfork. Faced with evidence of his falsification, Pitchfork confessed to the crimes, and when his blood was finally tested, its DNA matched that in the semen samples. Pitchfork went to trial in September 1987, was found guilty, and was sentenced to life in prison, thus becoming the first criminal convicted by DNA evidence.
