That situation opens new sales, marketing and management positions to minorities. Companies will increasingly choose advertising and product selection to appeal to distinct communities. Insurance companies like New York Life, Metropolitan Life and Mony Life are already aggressively wooing high-profile members of immigrant communities to become agents.

Living standards. America’s capacity to absorb and Americanize immigrants remains one of our greatest competitive strengths. Other underutilized resources (minority and female workers and managers) will become more prominent in the next decade. Partially by necessity and partially by evolution, progressive businesses will see diversity less as a moral and regulatory issue and more of a dynamic competitive advantage. Meanwhile, as the next chapter discusses, more businesses, large and small, will be seeking opportunities beyond our borders, in rapidly expanding global markets.
