Defining whether a product can be characterized as CleanTech thereby often depends on the context and the system the product is a part of. The relative feature of the concept can lead to ambiguities as some technologies or technology systems may simultaneously solve some problems while creating new ones.

The concept is in that respect contrasts the concept of cleaner production that mainly targets established industries and mainly focuses on how existing production processes can be optimized and improved in order to eliminate or reduce the environmental impact. Case Study: Implementation of Electric Cars The following case study illustrates how climate change mitigation by the integration of wind turbines in the Danish energy system combined with the introduction of electric cars opens opportunities for new CleanTech business models.

The first section discusses the definition of the concept ‘CleanTech’ and analyzes similarities and differences between related concepts. This leads to a typology of three types of CleanTech solutions: single business based CleanTech solutions, lifecycle based CleanTech solutions and system based CleanTech solutions. The second part of the article discusses how new CleanTech solutions are developed and diffused, and elaborates on typical problems that occur in this process. This part also presents a case study concerning the integration of electric car systems in Denmark which illustrates how solutions to environmental problems can create new business opportunities.
