If the fragile condition of the state was not to prevail, it clearly had to forego the old notion that politics was nothing more than an administrative task which could be best carried out by an omnipotent arbiter. The reluctance to pay the going ‘market price’ of politics proved in the end to be a main watershed in the demise of the old style Tsarist-based exceptionalism in Russia. It also proved to be a key watershed in the emergence of a totally different kind of Russian exceptionalism – Bolshevism.

If the bourgeoisie was incomparable with the nobility as an embodiment of a dominant social group willing to succumb to absolute state control in a purely docile and servile manner, the comparison between the working class and the peasantry as embodiments of subaltern social forces could not have been wider.
